When I was young Never having lost a soul I thought I understood death When it was told to me by a friend And perhaps I did In a cold calculating way. When I was a little older I thought I understood death Having lost my grandparents That I saw once every few years And then their slow deterioration Grief was not something I could calculate. When I was a little older I thought I understood death When my pet, a constant companion Left my side forever. I wallowed and feared who would be next Grief is not something I could barricade When I was a little older I thought I understood death It ripped into my heart Making a mockery of my love There was nothing to weather or grasp Grief is not something I could overcome. I wonder in the end When my bell is rung Is death something I'll understand Or like those lives washed away before me Will I leave Unwillingly and full of regret.

A leaf, pale

A leaf, pale Veins of life clump heavily within it Without this weight, thinner than existence It would lift too high. Light dances on its thin form Reminding, it's precious weight It is there. Though the light tipped edges fade into the sun. Could a hand pass right through it? A shimmer of green just an illusion of color? Yet as it is plucked from the branch It falls dark, and too real. On its fall it browns and cracks No more the green illuminated beauty That attracted the attention of sun and sky A leaf, dead.

You sir, have created magic this day. There really isn't a comment that can truly express the impact this story has had on me. And I'm sure this is going to surprise you a bit but I want to tell you a short story. Hope you don't mind. Since I was about fourteen years old I've Known I wanted to be a writer.
